Trade War Update: Section 232 Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum and their Derivatives Double to 50% Effective June 4; Carveout for UK Imports
Here please find our most recent client memorandum providing a high-level overview of the latest developments in the trade war. As detailed in the memorandum, on June 3, 2025, President Trump issued the Proclamation titled “Adjusting Imports of Aluminum and Steel into the United States.” The Proclamation increases the ad valorem tariffs on imported steel articles, aluminum articles, and all their derivatives, from a previously set rate of 25% to 50%, for all countries. This heightened tariff rate applies to all goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from a warehouse for consumption on or after 12:01 a.m. EDT on June 4, 2025, with no exemption for in-transit merchandise. However, it is important to note that United Kingdom–origin goods will remain subject to the 25% tariff at least until July 9, 2025.
We will continue to monitor these developments closely and will keep you informed of any significant changes. In the interim, please feel free to reach out with any questions or requests for further information.
